Heat vs Mavs Historical Rematch of 2-Post NBA/ABA Merger Teams
The Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks will be making history this evening when they tip-off The 2011 NBA Finals. This will be only the second time in NBA history that two-post NBA/ABA merger teams of 1976 will face each other for an NBA Championship. The only other time was a matchup of the same two teams in 2006.
There have been eight NBA franchises since the NBA/ABA Merger of 1976. The Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat, New Orleans Hornets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Orlando Magic, Memphis Grizzlies, Toronto Raptors, and Charlotte Bobcats. The Oklahoma City Thunder are the Seattle SuperSonics franchise that was formed in 1967. They moved to OKC for the 2008-09 season.
The Dallas Mavericks were founded in 1980 and played its first NBA season in 1980-81. When Magic Johnson and Larry Bird came into the league in 1979 there were no Dallas Mavericks. The Mavericks were the 23rd NBA franchise.
The Miami Heat became the 25th NBA franchise in 1988 when they entered the league with Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets are now playing in New Orleans. The franchise moved to New Orleans in 2002.
The New Orleans Jazz in 1974 became the 18th NBA franchise. They were the last expansion franchise before the NBA/ABA of 1976 when the league expanded from 18 to 22 teams. The Jazz moved to Utah in 1979 one-year before the Mavericks became the Dallas NBA franchise in 1980.
June 17, 2011 will mark the 35th Anniversary (6/17/76) date of the NBA/ABA Merger announcement.
The Dallas Mavericks are seeking to become only the second NBA franchise post the NBA/ABA Merger of 1976 to win a title. The Miami Heat their opponent is the other.
Dallas is also looking to become the 3rd of the three NBA franchises in the state of Texas to win an NBA Championship San Antonio-4, Houston-2.

The number 23 and 25 equal the number 48. When the NBA was founded in 1946 there were 48 states in the union. Alaska and Hawaii were added in 1959. The number 65 the Anniversary of the NBA minus the number 48 the combined number of the Mavs and Heat as NBA franchises (65-48=17) equal seventeen. June 17th is the day that the NBA/ABA Merger was announced in 1976.
