Former NFL running back Herschel Walker is going to take up competitive mixed martial arts. The 47-year-old Walker has signed a multi-fight deal with Strikeforce. Walker, who holds a sixth-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, will take part in an intense 12-week training program next month. Walker is expected to make his MMA debut sometime in 2010.

The 47-year-old Herschel Walker is confident that he can hold his own against younger opponents.

"I will go in there and test myself against any 20 year old," Walker said. "I know there will be naysayers and I'm fine with that. I want to prove to people who sit on a couch and don't do anything but criticize other people that, if you're a true athlete or martial artist, you're not old until you can't get up and walk around anymore. MMA fighters are said to be some of the best athletes in the world, my plan at the age of 47 is to show the world I am still one of the best athletes as well."

Walker isn't the first athlete to cross-over into the world of MMA. Former Oakland A's slugger Jose Canseco recently took part in an MMA fight in Japan. Canseco lost easily to 7'2" Korean Hong Man Choi. Pro wrestler Kurt Angle has said he plans to join MMA's ranks. Even former Power Ranger Jason David Frank is said to be interested in becoming an MMA fighter

This isn't Walker's first foray into a sport besides football. Walker competed in the 1992 Winter Olympics in the two-man bobsled, finishing in seventh place.
