Hockey Night in Canada Unveils New Theme Song
After a nationwide search, the CBC has announced a winner in its contest to find a new theme song for its flagship Hockey Night in Canada broadcast. After receiving nearly 15,000 entries, the song "Canadian Gold," written by an Alberta school teacher, will be the new anthem that will open and close the CBC's hockey broadcasts. Composer Colin Oberst (not to be confused with indie rocker Conor Oberst) collected a $100,000 prize for the winning song.
Oberst's song has replaced Hockey Night's original theme by Dolores Claman, an iconic anthem that is often referred to as "Canada's second national anthem". After a contract dispute with the CBC, Claman sold the song's right to CTV for $3 million.

Jon Azpiri, I like this story. It's good stuff. Good for Dolores. The Hockey Night In Canada theme song will always resonate with me. Those cheapskates at CBC made a big mistake.

That new theme song is an abomination!! Who told this guy he could write music. I'll just skip the intro into HNIC and ignore that pathetic song. Too bad the kid's song didn't win, at least IT had promise.
