Horse Care: Floating The Teeth

Many people never have the privilege of a horse companion.  Those who do have an obligation to ensure the best possible care for their four footed friend.  There are many web sites that can give the novice horse person tips for good horse care but a good working relationship with an equestrian veterinarian and farrier is best.  At least once a year, while the annual checkup is conducted, a tooth check should be done.

Sometimes the teeth of horses develop sharp edges which left untreated, will result in mouth sores. If the horse has a steel bit put into its mouth at this point, it will be very painful.  The video shows a short portion of my horse having its teeth floated, or the sharp bits ground down.  The headgear it to keep his mouth open.  And yes, he was tranquilized for the procedure.  No, it doesn't hurt him.
