Kumar Sangakkara top-scored with a 26-ball 44, and Jeevan Mendis was not out at the end, hitting 43 off 30 deliveries.

Graeme Cremet took the only wicket to fall to the bowlers, finishing with 1-27 off his four overs, but shoddy fielding from the African team meant they've conceded 15-20 runs too many.

Ajantha Mendis returned for Sri Lanka after an eight-month lay-off following back trouble, while 23-year-old right-handed Dilshan Munaweera made his international debut in the Group C clash on home soil.

South Africa is the third team in the Group. Twelve teams are divided into four groups of three teams each with top teams qualifying for the Super Eight Stages.

Zimbabwe surprisingly omitted left-arm spinner Ray Price and instead relied more on pace.
