September 20th 2008 -- Dana Glacier, Mt. Dana, Toulomne Meadows, Yosemite National Park, California USA -- Ice Climber, Matt Hrudka contemplates the route across the Dana Glacier and up the Dana Couloir to the summit. Dana Couloir is a popular but also deceivingly long (appox. 1000 ft) climb that takes climbers from beautiful lake Dana to the boulder fields near the summit. Low grade ice, extremely fragile rock, a long approach and altitude can all add up to a challenging day for the unprepared. The Dana Glacier is a small and shrinking glacier in the Yosemite high country that probably won't survive the next century. Whether do to global warming or localized loss of snow the Dana is disappearing. -- Photo By Jeffrey Rueppel

Ice Climber Matt Hrudka surveying the Dana glacier before a climb up the Dana Couloir in September of 2008. A beguilingly straight forward climb to the summit of Mt. Dana hold dangers for not only for beginners but for experience hikers and climbers as well.
