Australia has opened its innings in the third cricket Test against India in Delhi, after the home side declared its first dig closed at 7 for 613.

VVS Laxman and Gambhir both notched double centuries as India took complete control of the Test match.

Laxman brought up his 200 with a lofted shot to deep mid-on, and skipper Anil Kumble's declaration promptly followed.

Earlier, opener Gambhir hit his maiden double century as the Australian bowlers struggled to find an answer to the onslaught.

Gambhir, who was eventually out for 206, and Laxman added 278 runs for the fourth wicket to leave the visitors toiling on a Ferozshah Kotla pitch expected to help spin bowlers later.
