Australia and India head into the Boxing Day amidst high off-pitch war of words that has seen not just cricket fans but even former greats joining the debate. As a true cricket puritan you may have wondered the fate of the game if only it was a contact sport.

When India toured Australia back in 2007/08, cricketing ties touched a new low with Andrew Symonds alleging Harbhajan Singh of being a racist. Do we want another such kind of repeat?

At least Michael Clarke feels that cricket can simply forget that incident and avoid the repeat. “I can guarantee you nobody in the Australian team will cross that and if they do, there will be punishments from the ICC (International Cricket Council), and also Cricket Australia.

“We’ll be doing everything in our power to play some really competitive, tough cricket, but we understand and acknowledge that we won’t cross that line,” Aussie captain has claimed ahead of the match.

But cricket being the game were skill matters more than your physical dimensions, the MCG promises to be a greater test of endurance than flamboyance.

Home side come into the Boxing Day in the backdrop of a massive revamp process under taken by Cricket Australia and under new coach Mickey Arthur. Add to it the loss against New Zealand in Hobart and a true cricket fan would concede that it’s end of an empire.

The Kangaroos are facing their worst phase in nearly two decades and another slump in form at the ‘G might see John Inverarity and his team’s axe swing and put an end to the careers of Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey.

Cricket pundits have already drawn the battle-lines between Australia’s penetrating bowling versus India’s batting might.

And with Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid and Gautam Gambhir- India do present a line-up which lists who’s who of cricket.

India’s batting legend Sachin Tendulkar is still waiting at the 99 century mark and there is something fascinating about the number 100 in cricket. And as that longing of the magical infinity like figure intensifies, one just forgets the fact that it’s that very unpredictability of the game which makes it such a mesmerising sport.

This will also be one last tour Down Under for Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman and they would be leaving no stone unturned to conquer the final frontier. That augurs well for Mahendra Singh Dhoni but what definitely not augurs well for him and chairman selector Kris Srikkanth is the health of their prime bowlers- Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma.

History is proof that great battles are not won by wounded generals and Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma led bowling attack has to get the 80 wickets in the four-match Test series.

Not just long ago Zaheer’s injury at Lord’s engineered a debacle which saw India losing its top Test rank and return from English soil with their reputation tarnished.

The ‘G, which has hosted the momentous first ever Test match in 1877 and the Olympics in 1956, is bound to test the chinks in India’s armoury, former great Wasim Akram had warned on your website just days before.

Thankfully for India, there won’t be any Decision Review System in the series but the two captains would definitely not be thinking on the same line when they head for the toss at the MCG.

A close one to one team comparison highlights that things are definitely not rosy in Aussie top order. Debutant Ed Cowan brings some fresh air to the proceedings and along with David Warner at the other end, promises some thrilling action.

Warner justified his Baggy Green with a sparkling Test ton on his debut at Hobart but can this be said for all others in the team? Former Aussie great and now respected commentator, Ian Chappell has urged captain Michael Clarke to promote himself to number three but will that happen? We will have to wait for the answer.

Until then, let’s spare a thought for the cricket loving spectators Down Under not just clapped and enjoyed but give the world new thoughts to ponder. It was in Australia (SCG) where a placard read- “Commit all your crimes when Sachin is batting. They will go unnoticed as even God would be watching.”
