Indian Wells Almost In Quarterfinals Stage

The 26th annual BNP Paribas Open is reaching quarterfinal stages at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California.

Andy Murray of Great Britain is through to fourth round, having defeated USA's Russell. Roger Federer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga have yet to play. Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal made it into fourth round yesterday. Nadal withdrew from the Australian Open earlier this year over a knee problem. The Spaniard says he is feeling confident at the tournament so far.

Half of women's quarter-finalists is already known. Elena Dementieva of Russia and Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska have advanced into quarterfinals, with Petrova (RUS), Jankovic (SRB) and Wozniacki (DEN) still to play. Other quarterfinalists include Samantha Stosur of Australia and Jie Zheng of China.

Surprising disappointments yesterday included Viktoria Azarenka of Belarus and Kim Clijsters of Belgium. Clijsters was given Laureus World Comeback Of The Year award for winning 2009 US Open title after coming out of her retirement. Maria Sharapova failed to reach fourth round yet again, going out early against Jie Zheng of China.

Tomorrow, women will clash in quarterfinals and men will play the round of 16.

The Tournament Of Withdrawals

This year's tournament had a large number of high-profile players missing. Russia's Dinara Safina withdrew with a back problem. Americans Serena Williams and Venus Williams continue their boycott of the event. Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro withdrew with a wrist injury. Fernando Gonzalez withdrew to help out in the earthquake relief effort in his native Chile. And, Nikolay Davydenko of Russia withdrew during the tournament with a broken left wrist.
