Intrepid cricketers to wield the willow on the roof of the world

The story says it is an 11 day walk in - but why not drive

It would be difficult to find someone who would classify cricket as an extreme sport, but an adventurous group of cricketers are taking the game to extremes with an attempt to play a match in the shadows of Mount Everest.

An England-based group will head to Everest base camp in April to play what they hope will be recorded as the highest-ever official sports match, raising money for charity along the way.

The idea came to Richard Kirtley-Wright two years ago when he was trekking towards Everest and noticed a group of hikers having a hit of cricket on a plateau known as Gorak Shep, around a kilometre from base camp.

It's a great place, hard work but so worth it. Wish them all the best and hope they raise a good sum of cash for charity.

The team, which includes medics and groundsmen as well as players, will undertake a nine-day trek to Everest base camp next month, before setting up a full-sized cricket pitch on the plateau of Gorak Shep and playing a match at 5,165 metres (17,000ft).

The climbers have funded the trip themselves and will be in the Guinness Book of Records.

I came across this magnificient mountain scape while descending for Gilgit and sure couldn't hold myself for capturing it. I was told by a local fellow sitting next to me that theses tracks are not reached to date and the melting ice reachs down the velly to form a large lake still unexplored.

One of the most magnificent mountains I've ever seen. It was really great to admire this Beauty and at the same time being on the top of the world.

The literal roof of the world the Mahalangur mountain range in north eastern Nepal is dominated by Mt. Everest and Lhotse. This image was captured from a height of 5545m at Kala Patthar. Looking across the Khumbu Valley at the world’s tallest mountains is an awesome experience and a feeling of infinite wonder. I could think of no better place to wield the willow and smack the cherry to the boundary.
