It's a sad day in Nashville.
Today, July 4, here in Nashville, Independence Day celebrations were overshadowed by the news of the apparent murder of former Titans quarterback Steve McNair. McNair, who had been a Titan for 11 seasons and led them to their only franchise superbowl appearance in 1999. McNair had returned to Nashville after playing three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens before retiring in 2008. Metro Police spokesman Don Aaron confirmed McNair as one of the two people shot in a downtown condominium today. He was apparently shot several times. A young woman was also found shot to death, and police are trying to make a connection between the two. McNair's wife has been found not to be involved in this situation. Also, police are trying to connect McNair to the condominium where his body was found today. The McNairs own a home in west Nashville, and little is know about the purpose of the condo.
The news of McNair's death occured while the city of Nashville was conducting it's 4th of July celebration just a few blocks away. A gun was found at the scene, but police are not yet indicating if this is a murder suicide or a double murder. "The city of Nashville, and the NFL has lost a great man today," one fan said. All of Nashville is deeply shaken by this news, and a full investigation is under way. Crime sceen investigators towed McNair's vehicle along with the younger womans vehicle to their crime lab. Fans from all over Nashville, began gathering around the condominimum complex, McNairs resturant Gridiron9, and LP Field to pay respects and remember one of the greatest passers in NFL history. McNair had passed for over 31,000 yards and led the Titans to two AFC championship games, including the superbowl appearance in 1999 which they lost to the St. Louis Rams. The Titans final drive in that superbowl, in a comeback effort, was orchestrated by McNair, and was stopped just short of the goal line. NFL fans everywhere remember the series of plays as, "The Drive." McNair, a great player, person, and humanitarian, will be greatly missed here in Nashville. The whole city is still in shock of the news of his passing. He was only 36 years old.
