Where is Allen Iverson going to play this season, if he decides that he wants to come back? He was granted a leave of absence for personal reasons and probably will never suit up in another game for the Grizzlies. Iverson is upset with being demoted to a bench player and won't likely want to return to the Grizzlies, unless they promote him back to a starter.
Here's a breakdown of four potential destinations/scenarios for A.I.:
- Cleveland Cavs: This is an idea cooked up by Michael Wilbon of the Washington Post. It makes a ton of sense because A.I. would automatically be the second scoring option behind Lebron. It would add a whole new dimension to their limited offensive scheme that currently lacks a small guard that can breakdown the defense. But do the Cavs even want A.I.? Nobody knows yet, as they haven't made any statements one way or another.
- New York Knicks: Not very likely, since team President Donnie Walsh has already ruled out a trade for A.I. Alan Hahn, New York Newsday (paid subscribers only), Allen Iverson likely won't be "the Answer" for the Knicks this season, but Donnie Walsh did indicate that he would look to make a roster move if his team's poor start continue.
- Charlotte Bobcats: I can see this working out because of Larry Brown, A.I.'s former head coach in Philadelphia that took them to the 2001 NBA Finals. I see no reason why A.I. couldn't displace Raja Bell from the starting lineup and team up with Wallace, Diaw, and Chandler to make them a more explosive offensive team. But the question remains whether Larry even wants to deal w/ A.I. after all these years? I doubt it.
- Retirement: This is very likely to happen if A.I. doesn't get traded to a either a contender or a team that will give him 25+ shots a game. This piece of news is still in rumor stage, and has not been confirmed by A.I.
Iverson joining LeBron would be like Randy Moss leaving the Raiders (which he hated, just like Iverson hates being with the Grizzlies) to hook up with Tom Brady in New England. Even if Iverson was coming off the bench, his energy would light up the Q during home games. It's been years since Iverson played before that kind of home crowd and had that kind of goodwill extended to him by a metropolis desperate to win. He'd be part of a championship equation.
Memphis Grizzlies guard Allen Iverson, said to be unhappy with his role coming off the bench, is reportedly considering retirement.
