Jack Tatum Former Ohio State Buckeye Dies Of Heart Attack
His nickname was The Assassin, known for his fierce hitting, ex Oakland Raider and Houston Oiler, Jack Tatum died of a heart attack in Ohio.
The NFL Network ranked him as the sixth-most feared defender in league history in a panel last summer. His hit on Darryl Stingley in 1978 left the Patriots wideout paralyzed.
Jack Tatum won a Super Bowl when he was with the Oakland Raiders in 1976.
After his retirement from the NFL in 1980 he was diagnosed with diabetes and ultimately had to have his right leg and the toes on his left foot amputated.
Ohio State coach Jim Tressel later instituted the "Jack Tatum Hit of the Week Award," given to the Buckeye player who had the best defensive hit of the game.
"We have lost one of our greatest Buckeyes," Tressel said in a statement that was issued Tuesday. "When you think of Ohio State defense, the first name that comes to mind is Jack Tatum. His loss touches every era of Ohio State players and fans."
Jack Tatum is survived by his wife and three children
