Jared Retkofsky Quits Job as Furniture Mover to Join Pittsburgh Steelers
Jared Retkofsky had resinged himself to life with a furniture moving company when he got a call from the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers. Retkofsky, who was making $15 an hour moving sofas, has signed a contract with the team that will pay him a six-figure salary.
Retkofsky will be the team's long snapper, the player that snaps the ball to the team's kicker on punts, extra point attempts, and field goals. Retkofsky will replace Greg Warren, the team's starting long snapper who went down with a knee injury in last week's loss to the New York Giants.
In the football world it's considered a thankless job, but Retkofsky is happy to have it. He got the job after trying out for the team in 2007. He left an impression and when the team needed a long snapper on short notice, he got the call.
Prior to joining the Steelers, Retkofsky was moving furniture as a way to make ends meet while trying to figure out what to do with his life.
Retkofsky was moving on from football, working for the moving company while exploring other careers, such as police work—and then the Steelers called.
He went through a full week of practice, saying, “I’m just trying to get back into the rhythm of snapping.”
“In camp, you never know what’s going to happen and what they’re going to decide and what your future is,” he said. “Right now I kind of have an idea what my future is and what it can hold. As long as I do my job and do it right, I could have a career at this.”
