Jayson Werth Debuts New Beard: Compared to "Jesus Christ"
In fear of being forced to leave Phillies after this season when his contract ends, Jayson Werth debuted a new beard at camp garnering a comment from Brad Lidge comparing him to "a combination between Jesus Christ and the caveman from Geico." Werth was apparently not keen on talking about his new long hair and beard, saying to one reporter, "I’m not going to ask you to explain that thing on your neck."
Werth's contract with the Phillies expires following this season, so his future with the team is shaky but, furthermore, he can't expect a big payday from any team he would be on. The Phillies have already allocated $130 million of their expected $140 million payroll to 15 players on the 2011 roster. While he refused to comment on his appearance, Werth did talk about the contract situation saying, “It’s a tough situation. I look at Aaron Rowand. I think Aaron Rowand would’ve loved to be here the last couple years as well. I’ve talked to Cliff . I know he was disappointed about leaving. It’s a tough situation. For me to sit here and talk about it, I don’t even know if I have the words to explain the whole situation, really. Again, I’m just focused on playing baseball hard, playing it the right way, and bringing another championship home to Philadelphia. That’s the big picture here. I’m focused on that, and the other stuff will take care of itself.”
Werth's only potential replacement is Domonic Brown, in the Class AA

Looks like Jayson Werth, period. We still like and need this outfielder in Philly.
