Jeremy Abbott Wins US Figure Skating Championship
Jeremy Abbott won his first national title at the AT&T U.S. Figure Skating Championships Sunday. Three-time defending champion Johnny Weir faltered finished a disappointing fifth place.
Abbott finished with 241.89 points, more than 13 points ahead of second-place finisher and training partner Brandon Mroz. Two-time defending champ Evan Lysacek was third.
In many ways, the big story of the day was not Abbott's triumph, but Weir's failure. Weir fell to fifth place after two disappointing performances at the US Figure Skating Championship and might miss the World Championships for the first time since 2003.
The World Championships, which will take place in Los Angeles, will determine how many spots the US will receive at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Right now, Jeremy Abbot and Evan Lysacek appear to be the favorites to make it to Vancouver, with Brandon Mroz also in the running.
