San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh and Detroit Lions head coach nearly got into a fight after their two teams played on Sunday, October 16, 2011.
The Jim Harbaugh-Jim Schwartz fight (or near-fight, as it were) occurred when the two coaches met on the field after the game. Harbaugh ran up to shake Schwartz's hand when he gave him a firm slap on the back.
Schwartz didn't care for it and the two exchanged words. They eventually had to be separated by players.
Both coaches have a reputation for being kind of intense.
What Did Jim Harbaugh Say To Jim Schwartz?
We're not sure, but according to Schwartz, the exchange between coaches including some obscene language.
"I went to congratulate Coach Harbaugh and got shoved out of the way," Schwartz said. "And then I didn't expect an obscenity at that point, so it was a surprise to me at the end of the game."
After the game, Harbaugh said, "That is totally on me," Harbaugh said. "I shook his hand too hard. I really went in, and it was a strong, kind of a slap-grab handshake."
Pro Football Talk suggests that both coaches could face fines for the post-game incident, particularly Schwartz who appeared to make contact with Harbaugh.
Sunday proved to be a strange day for coaches. Shortly after the Harbaugh-Schwartz fight, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton was injured on the sidelines.
