Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson has died of cancer at the age of 68.

Jim Johnson had been part of Andy Reid's coaching staff since 1999. Johnson was highly regarded in coaching circles, having received accolades for his innovative defensive schemes.

In January of this year, Johnson told the Eagles that he had a tumor on his spine. Johnson's health had deteriorated to the point where he used a motorized cart to get around. He coached the team's two playoff games from the press box instead of on the field. At the end of the season, Johnson took a leave of absence from the team.

Prior to his stint with the Eagles, Jim Johnson had worked with the Seattle Seahawks, Indianapolis Colts, and Arizona Cardinals.

Jim Johnson is not to be confused with popular broadcaster and former NFL head coach Jimmy Johnson.
