Abbotsford Heat Head Coach Jim Playfair Had a Meltdown During a Game Against the Hamilton Bulldogs. Here's the Jim Playfair Video

It's not easy being an minor league hockey coach. Just ask former NHLer Jim Playfair. The head coach for the AHL's Abbotsford Heat went crazy after one of his players received a major penalty.

The Jim Playfair meltdown video shows the coach losing his mind at referee Jamie Koharski, the son of former NHL ref Don Koharski. Playfair screams at Koharski, then takes grabs hockey sticks out of his player's hand and smashes then on the boards. He even rips off his blazer making him look like some sort of hybrid between Don Cherry and Hulk Hogan.

Not surprisingly, Jim Playfair was given a two-minute bench minor for "abusive language" and a 10-minute game misconduct.

So Why Did Jim Playfair Go Crazy?

Here's what happened. Abbotsford's J.D. Watt ran into Hamilton goaltender Cedrick Desjardins while pursuing the puck. Watt was given a five-minute penalty for charging, along with a 10-minute game misconduct. Watt thought he should have received a two-minute minor for the Desjardins hit and protested the call. Watt got so angry that he had to be escorted off the ice by a linesman.

Koharski skated over to Abbotsford bench to explain the call to Jim Playfair. He clearly didn't like what he heard. After the explanation, Playfair went ballistic.

The Abbotsford Heat didn't respond well to the Jim Playfair meltdown. Already down 2-0 at the time of the incident, the Abbotsford Heat gave up two more goals, losing the game 4-0.

Playfield was absolutely right, Koharski  made the wrong call and that was not the only one he made in this game. Then after talking to Playfield, Koharski does not even explain his reasoning and just says: ITS FINAL!What a JERK!

The team is called the Abbotsford Heat, not the Abbotsford Flames.

He is an awesome person.  He is passionate and got upset.  His kids, family, and friends, think it is funny, as they know what he is like.  Everyone is teasing the guy.  It takes a lot for him to explode like that, but once he does... KAPOW!!!!!!He is an amazing person, who was passionate about a very stupid call by the ref.  Was it the right reaction? Probably not, he went far overboard and is paying for it.  But it was a reaction of a passionate coach who cares about his team, and that is what every team wants and needs.  Don't worry about Jimmy and his family... they will be just fine!!

Love of the game

Here we go again, we blame a coach for a loss when we should be looking at the real problem. The apple doesnt fall far from the tree, another Koharski wanting to be famous in a game where the official should really be invisable. Our countries hold hockey summits to figure out whats wrong with the game, when do we look at the referee's in the sport? Have we ever suspended a referee for single handedly taking over a game as in situations like this? When do the hockey powers do something with the referee......

Maybe the Calgary Flames need that kind of passion, and intensity in their coaching staff. It will be difficult for Koharski to graduate to the big league if he continues to call those kind of embarrassing non penalties.

Oh wonderful.  Applaud this kind of uncontrollable behavior.  Maybe in a few years we can read about one of the players watching him in action. Probably going to prison for mimicing his coach and possibly killing someone.  WTG you boneheads who think this is funny. Disgusted with the coach and your favorable comments.

You must be a girl. Why do you read this in the first place? This is giving you a reason to ventilate your frustration, right? He didn't attack anybody. So for you there is no difference in between his actions and killing somebody? They never told you sport is an excellent way to canalize your aggression? You should do that too.

Well, well, well another airhead stands up to be heard.  For your information P. Maenhaut there is a lot of literature written on the effects on young people from witnessing overly aggresive behaviors.  I don't want any youngster to think that loosing it for a few passionate moments is ok.  It's not.  A lot of bad things can happen while acting a fool.  What if a piece of that hockey stick had hit someone and caused the loss of an eye.  You said "I must be a girl".  Yes, I am a female and proud of it....you must be a macho chauvinistic pig.  Touche'.  Oh, by the way it's Lophil not Lohil.  Don't you men ever get anything right?
