On the Field with Tim Tebow

UPDATE: During the BCS Title Game, Tebow switched his eye-black message from Phil 4:13 to the more well-known John 3:16. The Bible passage reads:

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

As mentioned, John 3:16 is one of most well-known passages in the Bible. John 3:16 can be found on fan-made signs at sporting events across America. Most famously, Rollen Stewart, aka Rainbow Man, became a minor celebrity by holding a John 3:16 sign while wearing a large rainbow-colored wig.

For much of the season, Florida quarterback Tim Tebow has worn eye black with the words "Phil 4:13" on it. No doubt, many fans have wondered what the cryptic message means.

At first, it would appear to be a reference a reference to the Bible, not unlike John 3:16, the Biblical passage that is ubiquitous at sporting events. But the gospels were written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, not some guy named Phil.

So what does Phil 3:14 mean? It turns out that it is indeed related to the Bible. "Phil 4:13" is a reference to Philippians 4:13, which reads:

I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

The phrase seems to have caught on with Gators fans. There are even Philippians 4:13 t-shirts for sale on eBay.
