John Atkinson: Golf celebrity passes away at 38 from Lung Cancer

John Atkinson who was best known for his celebrity US Open golf contest passed away at his Omaha home on June 11th, from lung cancer.

A non-smoker, Atkinson was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2007 and became an advocate for lung cancer awareness with his messages through a golf round televised by NBC in 2008.
Golf Digest sponsored the event where participants were challenged to break 100 at Torrey Pines in San Diego. Atkinson's winning essay was selected from 56,000 entries but failed in his attempt to break 100. However, he gained tremendous support for his fight against lung cancer.

He became an advocate for lung cancer awareness and was able to advance that message nationwide through the round of golf televised in June 2008 on NBC.

After John Atkinson lived in a house with elevated levels of radon. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. For your family's protection, test you house for radon.
