John Terry Dropped as England's Captain Due to Sex Scandal
John Terry is no longer Captain for England's national squad, after Coach Fabio Capello has dropped the defender amid accusations that Terry slept with the former girlfriend of teammate Wayne Bridge.
Capello has named Rio Ferdinand as Terry's replacement, and informed Terry of the decision a week after rumors of an affair with Vanessa Perroncel became public.
"After much thought, I have made the decision that it will be best for me to take the captaincy away from John Terry," Capello said in a statement. "As a captain with the team, John Terry has displayed extremely positive behavior. However, I have to take into account other considerations and what is best for all of the England squad. What is best for all of the England team has inspired my choice."
Terry says he respects Capello's decision, and added he would do everything he could for England.
While the captaincy issue may be resolved, Capello may have bigger problems to deal with on March 3rd, England's first match since the scandal broke. There are questions of whether Bridge, Ashley Cole's backup, will be able to play on the same team as Terry.
Bridge is returning from a knee injury, and it's unclear of how the two will play together on the field. Bridge has a 3-year-old son with model Vanessa Perroncel.
