Johnny Tapia Dead at 45

Johnny Tapia, five-time boxing champion, was found dead in his Albuquerque, New Mexico home on May 27, 2012. Johnny Tapia was 45 years old.

Johnny Tapia had won titles in the WBA bantamweight division, as well as the IBF and WBO junior bantamweight divisions and the IBF featherweight division.

1990 saw Johnny Tapia banned from boxing due to his cocaine addiction. In 1994, he came back to win his first title (WBO bantamweight).

In his 2006 autobiography, Tapia described how he had been declared clinically dead five times, each time due to a drug overdose. He also survived shootings, a bus crash and a near-drowning.

Johnny Tapia's autobiography is titled Mi Vida Loca.

How Did Johnny Tapia Die?

Police are not treating Tapia's death as suspicious, but it's not yet clear how he died. An autopsy is scheduled.
