Actor Kevin Costner and his band Modern West have recorded a song for the Tampa Bay Rays as they begin their first-ever playoff run. The song is titled "It's Up to You" and never explicitly mentions the Devil Rays.

The song, a midtempo arena rocker, actually never mentions the Rays by name. It extols an unnamed "you" to "give a hundred percent" and to not let "anybody else tell you what you can and can't do" (excluding, we assume, the umpires). It also includes the radio call of Cliff Floyd's home run against the White Sox.

In an interview today, Costner said he had been working on the song previously but added lyrics that are "metaphorically where the Rays are at this moment." He said that "it was something that I wanted to do for the guys. It's a gift. How it is used is up to them."

Costner said he sees the tune as a "war song" for the team, although he acknowledged that most players, who are in to hip hop, might not like the song, which he called "pretty Stones-y."

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards might have an issue with being mentioned in the breath as the tepid song. You can hear the song here and judge for yourself.

Costner isn't the first musician to get in on the baseball playoffs. A few weeks ago, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder released a song for the Chicago Cubs.

Costner's career has often revolved around America's pastime. He has starred in several baseball-related films: the 1988 cult classic Bull Durham, 1989's Field of Dreams, and the 1999 flop For the Love of the Game. In 2005, he played a retired baseball player in The Upside of Anger.
