The Kings and the Superkings produced 2 thrillers last season. A superover in Chennai, which the Kings won and then the last over nail-biter in Dharamshala where Dhoni hit those 2 sixes of Irfan Pathan to blast CSK into the Semis.. We still don't know if the balls were actually found! Lets see if they produce another one today..
Ryan McLaren: It was tough to recover after the early loss of wickets, but we did reasonably well. There are a few positives from the last game. Most of the teams are having to rebuild after the new teams. It has been great playing for Mumbai in the first two seasons, and now it's good to learn from players like Gilly and Bevan.
Teams:
Kings XI Punjab (Playing XI): Adam Gilchrist(w/c), Shaun Marsh, Paul Valthaty, Dinesh Karthik, Abhishek Nayar, Sunny Singh, Ryan McLaren, Piyush Chawla, Praveen Kumar, Bhargav Bhatt, Ryan Harris
Chennai Super Kings (Playing XI): Murali Vijay, Srikkanth Anirudha, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni(w/c), Subramaniam Badrinath, Scott Styris, Albie Morkel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Suraj Randiv, Tim Southee, Shadab Jakati
Dhoni: Frankly speaking, I don't like the game to go till the last over. It is tough for the boys to handle the pressure. It looks like a good track, since it is a 4 o clock match, there will be no dew as well. We were looking to bat first, quite happy. No changes today.
Gilchrist: The wicket is greener than the other sub continent wickets but I don't think the ball will seam around. We have had a couple of team meetings, and we need to execute them. We are going to bowl first, the wicket is going to stay the same. Our bowlers did a good job the other day, Ryan Harris comes in place of Rimmington. Our challenge is to pick up some momentum.
Kings XI Punjab have won the toss and elected to field
Badrinath: I was due to bat at 4 but due to the team strategy I could not play in the first game. There are times in the tournament where I don't get to bat, but I wouldn't mind that as long as we win. We, by far, have been the more successful team in the IPL. We have almost got the same squad and the dressing room environment is good. Everyone of us - we Indians - are happy with the World Cup win, Dhoni is a calm captain, there is a lot to learn from him. They say T20 cricket is a game of luck, but that's how it goes.
After a crushing win for Mumbai last night, it is now time for Match No. 9 of the Indian Premier League, Chennai Super Kings travel to Mohali to face the Kings XI in their own backyard. Chennai look favorites, looks like Gilly has to weave his magic yet again and let his bat do the talking if they have to entertain any thoughts of competing against Chennai. On field the match will be played by the Chennai Super Kings and the Kings XI Punjab. Off the field, the brownie points will be won by the winning team's owners, who have far from a cordial relationship. N Srinivasan is probably the most powerful man in the BCCI right now, and was undoubtedly instrumental in axing the Punjab and Rajasthan franchises early in the year, before legal battles were fought by both to preserve their status. It is safe to say, that the animosity felt by Preity Zinta and co towards N Srinivasan will be far greater than the animosity on the field between Gilchrist and Dhoni.
Chennai Super Kings:
Chennai, as they have throughout the IPL's history, continue to look like a strong side that will be tough to beat. They had a narrow win against a spirited Kolkata, but as Dhoni said, that was the first match for Chennai with slightly different personnel and irrespective of the result, Chennai would have learned from it. There are few better captain-coach combos than Dhoni-Fleming in the IPL, and that gives Chennai an advantage even before they step onto the field. The absence of Matthew Hayden has been adequately covered by the emergence of S Aniruddha, who bats in the same carefree manner that his father used to. Murali Vijay, the other opener, has been short of runs somewhat, but this batting friendly format is the best way to get his form back. The middle order of Raina, Dhoni, Morkel and Badrinath is as solid as they come, and if Raina, in particular, hits his straps, Chennai will be very difficult to contain. The bowling is not as strong as the batting, but Tim Southee had a very good World Cup, while R Ashwin is amongst the best spinners in the IPL.

The first match of IPL 2011 was disastrous for the Kings XI, being soundly thrashed by Pune. Against a side that looks even better than Pune's did on paper, the Kings XI will have to lift their game and fast. In a way, the Punjab side's troubles start at the top with Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh opening. Gilchrist was not in the best of nick in last year's IPL, and another year away from cricket might not have helped him. Marsh has not managed to recapture his glory days of IPL 2008. Every side needs their openers to get them off to good starts, and Punjab will be desperately hoping that Gilly's genius re-surfaces and Marsh discovers the full flow of his batting. The bright spot for Punjab was Ryan McLaren, who literally waged a lone battle for them. McLaren's performance against Pune lacked support, but he showed that had he been given some support with the bat by even two or three others, the story could well have been different. Bowling is Punjab's biggest worry, with no outstanding bowler capable of turning a match on his own being present in the ranks. Their attack of Praveen Kumar, Piyush Chawla alongwith McLaren and Abhishek Nayar can at best be described as 'triers' who can be above average on their day.
Captain vs Captain The interesting mini-battle to watch out for here is the one between the captains. Both Dhoni and Gilchrist are wicket-keeper batsmen and both are known and respected for being good thinkers. Additionally, there is one more link between them: Both have been the Man-of-the-Match in the last two World Cup finals!
They have different resources to deal with here though, and on paper, Dhoni appears to be the favourite to come out smiling at the end of this match.
