2009 Federated Auto Parts 300 - Kyle Busch In Victory Lane

NASCAR driver Kyle Busch raised some eyebrows after smashing a guitar trophy after his victory at Nashville's Nationwide race.

The winner of the NASCAR race in the Music City is given a Gibson guitar. When Busch got out of his car he took the trophy and smashed it in a style that would make Jimi Hendrix and Pete Townsend proud. Of course, Busch's technique wasn't as polished as those classic rockers. Busch smashed the guitar to the ground three times, but the Les Paul remained largely intact.

Busch says he smashed the guitar because it was something that race car drivers never do. He also said he wanted to share the smashed bits of his guitar with his teammates.

Sam Bass, the artist who painted the trophy guitar didn't seem to mind.

"I'll be honest with you, I was stunned when it happened," Bass said. "But when I went to Victory Lane to take a picture with Kyle, he said there was no disrespect to me, the speedway or the sponsors. He just said he was going to give each one of his guys a piece of the trophy. In the spirit of rock and roll and, as someone who appreciates rock and roll, he put on a show."

Of course, not everyone was so excited by Busch's behavior. His aggressive driving style and confident demeanour have earned him a fair share of criticism. Trying to destroy a prized trophy may only provide more ammunition for his many detractors.

What was he trying to accomplish by smashing the race trophy, a beautiful Gibson Les Paul guitar?

He is not Kurt Cobain or Eddie Van Halen or Pete Townshend or Keith Richards. Hell, he’s not even Nick Jonas.

Unless you are trying to dramatically cap off a rock show in front of tens of thousands of fans, don’t smash a guitar. You just end up looking like a d-bag.

Kyle just proved himself to be a complete idiot.

M & M's (Mars), Interstate Batteries, Mechanix Wear, Certurion Boats, or 17th Street Surf Shop will never have my business again.

This is the dumbest statement I have ever heard. You're not going to eat a packet of M&M's because Kyle smashed a trophy that WAS HIS??? You're the idiot. M&Ms are delicious.

Kyle is a Vegas brat that has no respect for anyone. To understand the value of the Sam Bass Guitar you must first understand values. Children have to learn them. Kyle is a poor excuse to represent Nascars Roots.

It was his tropy/guitar to do what he pleased with.  The kid can buy 1000+ Sam Bass painted Les Paul's if he wants.  I'm not a Shrub fan, but I love how the kid keeps it interesting.  Some of you need to lighten up...ALOT.

How the kid keeps it interesting. Hey Eli smashing a couple thousand $ guitar will keep alot of people away. Nascar is a insitution  Kyle Bush does not belong. What a spoiled kid why not donate to kids who don't have anthing interesting to play with.JMO

Kyle's actions were classless.  He'll never be a respected driver like Richard Petty, Bobby Alison, Bill Ellioit, Mark Martin, etc. as long as he acts like a spoiled teenager.

Would you be upset if he destroyed a very expensive painting, or burned a pile of cash?   That guitar, even without the Sam Bass paint job, is worth in excess of $3000.00!

If people believe it was no big deal, they are just stupid.  If he didn't want it, then he should have given it to one of his fans.  I guess he would have to get some fans, first.

Nick Jonas???  really?  Nick is NOTHING.

Now we know what the initials K. B. really stand for Kry Baby! What a poor excuse a driver,  Kyle may win races but he's such a spoiled brat and sore loser.

Your statement might make sense if

A. The word cry actually started with a "K"
B. If Kyle had lost that race and he had taken the guitar from the winner and then smashed it.

Instead you just sound like a numnut. Or wait, let me guess - a Junior fan?

I have written Coca-Cola who owns NoS drink to inform them I am boycotting ALL their products. I have written NASCAR to let them know I am boycotting all TV and race attendance.  I have written Toyota. That was total disrespect, I don't care what kind of bu$$hit reason he tries to give. I as a poor musician would have put that fine instrument to great use.

It's too bad then that you're a poor musician and not a rich race car driver!

I LOVE NOS, TOYOTA AND KYLE BUSCH!!!!!!

Well, yet another reason i can't stand fools who drive around in circles. Kyle Bush is a total jerk with no respect for anyone or anything. Sam spent a lot of time and artistic effort on that guitar thinking that it would be a treasured part of the winner's memorabilia. Instead this fool smashes it right in front of the artist who made it. I think Gibson and all guitar companies should refuse to give out instruments to nascar idiots anymore. Nascar =drunken fools.

So you're commenting on a guy and a sport you have no interest in???  Sam Bass has numerous copies of that guitar made and Kyle is buying two more from him so he's not out anything.  If the artist gets it, who cares what anyone else thinks?   Stay off the NASCAR races, sit home and play with your joystick and let fans enjoy their sport.  It's no skin off your nose.

It just gives people who don't like him another chance to rip on him.  If Jr. finally won a race and did something like that, the fools would be cheering.   It was certainly his trophy to do with as he pleased.  Kyle is exactly what NASCAR needs.  An aggressive, fired up racer with an attitude on and OFF the track.  For people who like the robot, pc spouting drivers, I'm sure he rubs them the wrong way and that just makes me like him more.    I emailed M&M's and thanked them for sponsoring him and told them they had made a great choice.

I find it hilarious that so many people are upset about another of Kyles antics. I would rather see him taking a bow or smashing a guitar than listening to Mr.PC Jimmie Johnson after a race. Kyle has made racing fun to watch again and I looke forward to seeing more. I wouldn't mind seeing a flip this week though. This has been an exciting year so far thanks to people like Kyle who don't act like corporate puppets. Gotta go-time for some M+Ms

just one more reason to detest that low class S.O.B.

OSUSam

Why is it whnever you KB fans read criticism of something he's done, you always bring up Jr. People upset over his childish guitar smashing act had nothing to do with Jr. That's always your excuse. "If Jr. would win, you would get off Kyle's back". No we wouldn't. If Jr. wins, we'll still look at Kyle as a classless, brat.

<?xml:namespace prefix = st2 /><?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Kyle Busch looks a more like "Peewee Herman" goes wild and attempts to smash a guitar.

Kyle Bush has shown that he is an imature low life. To take a musical instrument of that level and destroy it in front of people that would salivate just to play a few licks on it is an comtemptuous display of what he thinks of his fans.  I used to be one, but no more. Hope you finish 40th for the rest of the year. ...

NASCAR is a freakin joke!! Bunch of white trash beer swillin, sister bangin, pork rind eatin, rednecks!! The cars are ugly and pathetic, everybody is always busted for cheating, and the races are loooooong and boring.

fuel80

I thought it was great.  NASCAR has been a bit dull with out rowdy bush.  I cant wait to see what he will do next.  Bush has brought life back into nascar. I hope he smashes every trophy,

0
DMacDaddy

Who cares?  NASCAR is about the most stupid thing on TV anyway...it is NOT  sports its a bunch of idiots driving in a circle for 3 hours and having a bunch of rednecks grunt the words Chevy or Ford or Earnhart or Pass the Beer.

Ben Slote

Hilarious that people are whining and calling it disrepectful because it was "so nice" and "you" would have cherished playing it.  Too funny.  Go become a pro race driver and earn your own then you sissies.  That's the benefit of being successful.  You can do what you want with your property.

I Thought smashing the quitar was a poor jesture!

The guitar was made special for the race.  He is not setting a good example for the young kids who watch the race.

It was thoughtless

How long did it take him to "THINK" up the excuse to give a piece of it  to his crew?

He is immature

I love NASCAR.  But what Kyle Busch did in "trying" to smash that wonderful trophy was absolutely attrocious!! The boy is an idiot.  Hopefully, his sponsors will take note and release him from the demons that bind him!
