LeBron James will have a new uniform next year. Of course, the soon-to-be free agent could still be wearing a Cleveland Cavaliers jersey, but with a different number. LeBron James has applied to wear a new jersey number, switching from his trademark 23 to number 6.

LeBron James had announced earlier that he was planning to switch from 23 to 6 in honor of Michael Jordan.

Here is an excerpt of the TNT interview where LeBron James said he would switch uniform numbers.

Now he's made it official. This week was the deadline to apply to the NBA for a jersey number change and LeBron decided to go with number 6, the number he wore while playing for the US Olympic team.

The LeBron James number change could be a good thing for the NBA. A few years back, Kobe Bryant changed his number from 8 to 24. His new jersey quickly became the best-selling basketball jersey in the world.

Michael Jordan famously switched jersey numbers. After coming out of retirement, Jordan wore the number 45, eventually switching back to his trademark 23. Few people remember, that Jordan briefly wore 12.

Um...no, sorry man.  Filing for a jersey number change, if anything, means he is most likely staying in Cleveland.  If he was planning on jumping to another team, he wouldn't be required to file for a jersey number change; a player on a new team may choose to wear any number they want regardless of the number they wore on their old team (provided the number isn't retired or in current use).
