The game was subject to a 15-minute delay due to traffic problems in the area surrounding the ground.

The sold-out signs were in evidence around Brisbane Road and with a full-house, the game started at a quick tempo.

The hosts looked to rise to the occasion and moved the ball quickly, but it was United who had the first serious attempt on goal when Neil Kilkenny sent a shot skidding wide in the seventh minute.

Casper Ankergren was called into action after 10 minutes when he caught a speculative long-range free-kick from Jason Demetriou.

United had the ball in the net on 12 minutes when Dougie Freedman volleyed home a Bradley Johnson cross, but the strike was ruled out for an offside decision. Moments earlier, United had been denied by some great defending from Tamika Mkandawire, who cleared a dangerous Jonny Howson cross.
