Linda McMahon, the wife of WWE Chairman Vince McMahon and matriarch of the McMahon family, will be stepping down as WWE CEO to run for Senate. McMahon is expected to announce her political intentions shortly.

Linda McMahon hopes to be the Republican candidate in the state of Connecticut, the state that is home to WWE headquarters. Linda McMahon is expected to face stiff competition for the nomination. Former U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons, economist Peter Schiff and former Ambassador to Ireland Tom Foley are also looking to get the nod from the Republicans.

Linda McMahon will likely prove a worthy foe. While she likely won't hit any of her opponents over the head with a folding metal chair, she does have deep pockets and solid political connections. Former Connecticut governor and Senator Lowell Weicker serves on the WWE's board of directors. Earlier this year, McMahon was appointed to the Connecticut Board of Education.

The McMahon family has worked for decades to build a pro wrestling empire, and many say Linda McMahon, not Vince McMahon, is the true brains behind the WWE empire.

Linda McMahon is leaving the WWE at a critical time in the company's development. The WWE is hoping to expand its reach through a launch a cable network. It also hopes to make films featuring WWE wrestlers.
