Australia have almost assured themselves a place in the semi-finals with comfortable victories against India and South Africa and they will look to extend their unbeaten run in the tournament when they take on Pakistan in the penultimate match of the Super 8s. For Pakistan, it is a tough situation as they will be competing with the other teams in their group to make it to the next round and even a win for them will not immediately assure them of a place.

What they need to do to qualify: There is an intriguing fight between three teams in Group 2 to make it to the semi-final. While Australia are clear favourites to make it to the final four, The outcome of the matches between Australia-Pakistan and India-South Africa will eventually decide the semi-finalists from the group. A win for Australia will guarantee them a place. If they end up losing to Pakistan and India beat South Africa, then Australia, India and Pakistan will end up with two wins each. Even a loss to Australia will not matter much for them as they have a superior net run-rate. Unless they suffer a sound thrashing at the hands of Pakistan and India beat South Africa by a thumping margin, Australia not making it to the next round is unlikely. For Pakistan to get through, they need to beat Australia by a good margin and hope that their net run-rate is better than India if their sub-continent neighbours happen to beat South Africa. If Pakistan lose to Australia, they still can make it to the semis. But for that to happen, South Africa will have to beat India and the NRR of both India and South Africa must be lower than that of Pakistan.

Head to head: Australia have played a total of 10 T20Is against Pakistan. The team from Down Under ended up victorious on 4 occasions while losing 5 times. One game ended in a tie. The Australians have a better success ratio against Pakistan in World T20s, having won twice while ending up on the losing side once.

Australia: The team from Down Under have been by far one the best teams in the competition, having won all their matches so far. It is the impact of Shane Watson that has put Australia in this position as the all-rounder has performed brilliantly with both the bat and the ball in all the games Australia have played, in fact bagging the Man of the Match awards in all the four matches. David Warner too has been doing well at the top. Barring his failure in the match against South Africa, Warner has been lending Watson good support. Michael Hussey, batting at number 3 in this competition, has also done a good job whenever he has got an opportunity. While Australia's top three being in prime form is a big advantage for the side, therein also lies the team's weakness. The likes of Cameron White, George Bailey and Glenn Maxwell have not got enough opportunities with the bat and in case of a collapse at the top, the middle order would be exposed. White has batted twice and has scored a couple of twenties but there was no pressure whenever he came out and it will be a whole different scenario in case Australia lose early wickets.

Australia have some concerns with the bowling department. Although Watson has been doing a good job with the ball as well, having taken 10 wickets in the tournament so far, the likes of Pat Cummins, Brad Hogg, Dan Christian and Glenn Maxwell have economy rates in excess of 7, which has meant that the oppositions have been able to post decent totals. Although Watson's efforts has eclipsed this, expecting him to perform every time is asking a lot. Mitchell Starc is the other main-wicket taker for the Aussies and he also has a decent economy rate. Xavier Doherty was a surprise inclusion in the match against South Africa and he made an impression straight away with a fine bowling spell. But it is still unclear if he will play against Pakistan, as subcontinent teams are known to play spin well and it might come to a choice between Doherty and Hogg. Watson and Starc will be the key bowlers again but skipper Bailey will be hoping for the others to contribute as well.

Pakistan: In big tournaments, Pakistan's performance has always been up and down and it is the same case with them in this edition of the T20 World Cup. The main reason for their indifferent form is because the top order has been inconsistent. The likes of Mohammad Hafeez, Imran Nazir and Nasir Jamshed failed in both of Pakistan's Super 8 matches while Kamran Akmal and Shoaib Malik too have not been doing well. Although it did not matter much against South Africa as Umar Akmal and Umar Gul pulled off a victory from the jaws of defeat, the entire batting order failed against India, despite the opposition having a relatively weak bowling attack. Going up against the likes of Cummins, Starc and Watson will be a lot different and unless the Pakistani batsmen stick around for a longer period of time, it will not be easy going for the Hafeez-led side. With both the top order and the middle not contributing, Pakistan cannot expect close victories all the time and unless the batsmen do their tasks right, Pakistan might well be out of the competition by the end of the Super 8s stage.

Pakistan have always depended on their bowlers to do the job, which they have been doing even in this tournament. Hafeez, Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi have been bowling well, although the first two do not have too many wickets to speak for their efforts. Young left-arm spinner Raza Hasan also impressed in the couple of outings that he has had. The main concern in the bowling department for Pakistan has to do with the performance of the seamers. Umar Gul has been taken for a lot of runs and has also not been picking up wickets while Yasir Arafat too has been expensive, despite having taken 5 wickets so far. Pakistan will need the seamers to be at the top of their game, especially when bowling to powerful hitters like Watson and Warner.

Quotes:
I think he's (Watson) really set himself to be the man of the series, to be the person who leads Australia as far as he can in this tournament. When you see how he plays this form of the game, he's almost the complete cricketer: Australia captain George Bailey
We have had some reasonable performances against Australia just recently. But they have played very well in the last three weeks or so, in their warm-up games and in this tournament so far. It will be a good test, they are a good side: Pakistan coach Dave Whatmore

Annihilated by India in their second Super Eight match, an inconsistent Pakistan are faced with a do-or-die situation and need nothing less than a big win when they take on a rampaging Australia in the World Twenty20 here on Tuesday.

Pakistan will have to pick up the pieces from their all-round failure against the arch-rivals and come up with an inspired performance against the unbeaten Australian side, which has been almost assured a semifinal berth with a commanding eight-wicket victory over South Africa in their last game on Sunday.

Aware that one more defeat will ensure their exit from the tournament if India manage to beat South Africa later in the evening on Tuesday, Pakistan, after a win and a loss, have to clinch it against Australia to have any chance of making the semifinals.

The fight for the second semi-final slot from Group 1 is indeed intriguingly poised as both India and Pakistan have a fair chance of making the cut with the Aussies enjoying a healthy run-rate of +1.712.

In case Pakistan (-0.426), who are shade ahead of India (-0.452) in terms of net run-rate happen to win against Australia, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men will then have to win comprehensively against the South Africans in order to make it to the last four.

If Mohammad Hafeez`s men lose on Tuesday, then everything will boil down to the high-octane clash between India and SA. A win against the Proteas will be good enough for them to march into the last-four stage.

Even in case of a defeat, India should ensure that they don`t lose by a big margin.

South Africa have lost both their matches in contrasting manner -- a close defeat against Pakistan and a comprehensive one against Australia.

Even if they win on Tuesday, it would be an unlikely proposition for the A B de Villiers` side to seal the semifinal berth as their inferior run-rate (-0.605) at this stage of the tournament makes their case weak.

On a roll with an all-win record in the tournament so far, the George Bailey-led Australian side`s eight-wicket win over perennial chokers but serious title-contenders, South Africa yesterday must have done a world of good to their morale after topping Group B with wins over Ireland and the West Indies.

Pakistan, on the other hand, would have to regroup their resources after being shot out for a meagre 128 against India. Their bowlers also came a cropper, thrashed by the Virat Kohli-inspired Indian batting line-up.

Australia are the in-form side of the tournament with the top-order batsmen in roaring form and the frontline bowlers among the wickets.

The main worry for Pakistan would be swashbuckling Australian openers Shane Watson and David Warner, who have become the most successful pair in the T20 Internationals.

On Sunday against South Africa, Watson single-handedly guided the team to victory with a brutal 47-ball 70 and 2/29 while bowling.

Such has been the terror of the marauding all-rounder that Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore joked that his team will either have to poison Watson`s food or hope that he has a bad day in office against them.

Watson has so far collected four man of the match trophies and has scored 234 runs in the tournament. His bowling has also fetched him with 10 wickets.

Veteran Mike Hussey has also done his bit at one down and came good against the Proteas with a 37-ball 45.

Though fast bowlers, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, went wicketless in the last game but produced pace and bounce on a slowish Premadasa strip against the Indians.

Left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty picked up three wickets for 20 runs in his economical spell against the South Africans. Brad Hogg has also taken two wickets from the three matches he has played so far and without being expensive. Both can be handful if the pitch assists slow bowlers.

If there is any cause of worry for the Australians, it could be their middle order batsmen as they have not been tested in the tournament.

On the other hand, Pakistan looked completely out of sorts against India. On their day, the likes of Imran Nazir, Nasir Jamshed and Mohammad Hafeez can take any bowling side to the cleaners but they wilted under pressure against India.

Pakistan`s front-line bowlers, Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi and Yasir Arafat, also failed to make any impression against a solid Indian line-up.

Another problem for Pakistan has been Afridi`s sharp dip in form with the willow. A lot will also depend on Pakistan`s most talented young batsman Umar Akmal who on his day can take apart any bowling attack in the world.

Pakistan won the second Twenty20 international against in a dramatic super over on Friday at Dubai.
After Australia set a target of 12 runs for the Pakistani, skipper Mohammad Hafeez put Umar Akmal and Abdul Razzaq, for the run chase.

Australian skipper George Bailey chose young Pat Cummins, who was left dejected at the end of the super over.

"I'm not sure there are any No. 9 batsman to tie the game and he was really keen to bowl that over and that is something that is exciting from my point of view," Bailey said. "He will learn out of that ... I think his first four overs in terms of actual game were outstanding. On another day, he could have 3-20. I really like his last two games. I'm really excited about them."

Australia began the series with one of their worst Twenty20 losses but they finished it with their second-best win in the format, crushing Pakistan by 94 runs in the dead rubber in Dubai. David Warner and Shane Watson set up the victory with an Australian-record opening partnership before Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc ran through Pakistan, who suffered their worst defeat in a T20 international and were all out for 74, their lowest total in the format.

Pakistan still won the series 2-1 but if the old sporting cliché that you're only as good as your last performance can be trusted, the Australians will be reasonably happy when they arrive in Sri Lanka in the next few days for the ICC World Twenty20. The fact that Warner and Watson both fired and found their six-hitting rhythm would be especially pleasing for the captain George Bailey, although some more runs from the middle order would have been preferable.
