South African Team Advances to 4x400m Relay Final on Appeal

The South African relay team, which includes Oscar Pistorius, will indeed run in the 4x400m final.

This is a stunning turn of events for the team, which did not finish the race in Round 1.

Kenya's Vincent Mumo Kiilu ran into South Africa's Ofentse Mogawane as they reached the second bend in the second leg of the race. Mogawane fell and dislocated his shoulder.  Oscar Pistorius, next to run, began walking off the track, presuming that his Olympics were over.

However, South Africa appealed the decision, and the IAAF ruled that Mogawane was illegally hindered. Kenya was disqualified and South Africa was given Lane 1 in the final, which was supposed to be empty. Think of South Africa as a sort of wild card in the 4x400 final, and watch for Oscar Pistorius, Willem de Beer, Shaun de Jager, and LJ van Zyl to capitalize on their second chance. Pistorius will be running third.
