Men's Water Polo: Photos from July 31 Preliminaries

The Men's Water Polo competition is heating up, with three prelim matches in Groups A and B. Check out photos from the action below, as well as the results as they come in.

Men's Water Polo Group A Results:

  • Croatia 8-7 Spain
  • Australia 7-4 Kazakhstan
  • Greece 7-7 Italy

Men's Water Polo Group B Results:

  • Montenegro 11-10 Hungary
  • Serbia 21-7 Great Britain
  • USA 10-8 Romania

So far, defending Olympic Champions Hungary have scored the the third-highest number of goals overall (trailing Serbia and Spain), but has lost both of its first two games: in the Water Polo prelims, each team wins two points for a win and one point for a draw, regardless of match score.

Meanwhile, Serbia continues to establish dominance with a decisive win over Great Britain.

USA captain Tony Azevedo drew a red card in the final moment of the match (basically for talking smack to the referee), and risked missing the August 2 match against Great Britain. However, Azevedo will indeed be able to play.

(In the table above "Extra Player Shot Goals" refers to a man-up or 6-on-5 advantage; the equivalent of a power play in hockey.)

Out of the 12 teams, the top eight (four from each group) will progress to the knockout stage. Below you can see photos from today's Water Polo action: more will be added as we get them.
