The Women's Water Polo tournament continues at the 2012 Summer Olympics, and we're on top of the action.
August 1 sees the second round of preliminary matches in both groups. Here are the results so far:
Women's Water Polo Prelims- Group A:
- Hungary 11-10 China
- USA 9-9 Spain
Women's Water Polo Prelims- Group B:
- Russia 7-4 Italy
- Australia 16-3 Great Britain
China led Hungary into the fourth quarter, until Dora Czigany equalized. Barbara Bujka then sealed the deal with under two minutes remaining.
A hat trick from Ekaterina Lisunovka and a deadly sniper shot form Sofya Konukh highlighted Russia's win over Italy, whose Tania diMario managed to close the gap a bit in the fourth quarter.
Spain's first goal against the USA came from an extra-player shot, after an opening-minute ejection. The USA answered, but Spain's Jennifer Pareja then scored twice in a row. So far Spain maintained a slim lead, which the USA reversed as the third quarter ended, and extended their own lead as the fourth quarter progressed. Spain equalized again in the last minute of the game. Team USA's Kami Craig is on fire with four goals.
Australians Sophie Smith and Ash Southern started their match against Great Britain with a bang, giving Australia a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Britain's Chloe Wilcox was able to answer. The second quarter saw Australia extend their lead, with Wilcox netting another for Britain. However, the first half of Q4 saw Australia extend an 12-point lead, bringing the game beyond Britain's reach with a fifth goal by Australia's Rowie Webster.
