Women's Water Polo Finals: The Scores
- Italy 11-7 Great Britain
- China 16-15 Russia
- Australia 13-11 Hungary
- USA - Spain (8pm BST/3pm ET/Noon PT)
Great Britain came out swinging, but Italy ran away with the rest of the match, powered by Tania di Mario and Teresa Frassinetti. The British side maintained more possession, but couldn't quite crack the Italian defense. Britain will take 8th place in the tournament; Italy takes 7th.
China and Russia fought to a 14-14 draw at the end of regular play, forcing the match into extra time. Ma Huanhuan scored five goals in regular time, and a sixth in extra time so far. Wang Yi extended the lead in the second extra period, and, despite a goal by Nadezhda Fedotova with ten seconds left on the clock, China took 5th place, and Russia took 6th.
The USA won its first Gold Medal in Women's Water Polo, though they've been on the podium since the sport was introduced to the Olympics in 2000. Australia, who won in 2000, are bringing home Bronze this year. Spain, the winners of the Silver Medal, are on the podium for the first time.
