London 2012 Women's Water Polo Prelims: Results August 3
Women's Olympic Water Polo Action Continues on August 3. We've Got the Results... We're waiting for the Pics
That's right, aquatics fans: it's Water Polo time again. August 3 sees the last round of the Women's Water Polo prelims, which will set the stage for the knockout rounds. All eight teams in the Women's Water Polo tournament will advance to the next round: the prelims will determine the upcoming fixtures.
Here are the results as they come in:
Women's Water Polo Final Prelim Results: Group A
- Spain 13-11 Hungary
- USA 7-6 China
Women's Water Polo Final Prelim Results: Group B
- Australia 11-8 Russia
- Italy 10-5 Great Britain
Spain held a slim lead in Q1, extending it by one goal for the next two quarters. Hungary outscored Spain in Q4, but it wasn't quite enough. Spain's Anni Espar Llaquet punctuated the match with a player-advantage goal in the final two seconds.
Australia's Nicola Zagame brought the big guns to the match against Russia, scoring four goals. Ekaterina Lisunova (RUS) was almost able to answer: one of her three goals was the only one in Q3. Russia narrowed the gap, but was never able to equalize. Rowie Webster's long-distance shot in the 5th minute of Q4 put the writing on the wall.
Italy outscored Great Britain by a ration of two to one in all four quarters.
As of this post, the USA-China game is a nail-biter (and, under the water, a nail-scratcher: seriously, this is a dirty sport). The USA made up a one-point deficit to pull ahead in Q3. USA point-woman Maggie Steffens is really coming alive, equalizing and then extending the lead a few moments later. A heartbreaking bar-out kept Steffens from a fourth goal. The USA maintained a one-point lead until the final whistle.
Can words do this sport justice? Hell, no. However, we're still waiting for the poolside photographers to get their shit together and upload some images from the August 3 prelims. They better not have Water Polo fatigue, that's all we're saying.
