London 2012: Women's Water Polo Quarterfinal Results
Women's Olympic Water Polo: Results from August 5 Quarterfinals; Photos as They Emerge
The Quarterfinal Round in the 2012 Olympic Women's Water Polo tournament is underway as we type. Here you'll find the results as they come in, as well as the photos of the action as they emerge.
Women's Water Polo Quarterfinal Results:
- Hungary 11-10 Russia
- Australia 20-18 China
- USA 9-6 Italy
- Spain 9-7 Great Britain
A dominant Evgenia Ivanova couldn't save the day, as Russia fell to Hungary. The Russians held on until Q4, when point-woman Ildiko Toth and hole-set Dora Czigany took Hungary into overdrive. Russia began answering, but not fast enough.
A stunning last-minute goal from Australia's Holly Lincoln-Smith forced the match against China into overtime. In Water Polo, this is played as two 3-minute running periods. China couldn't keep up the intensity in the first extra-time, and Australia eked out a one-point lead. The second extra-time period remained scoreless until China's Huizi Sun found the net with 25 seconds remaining, forcing the game into shootouts.
In shootouts, each team gets five shots from the 5-meter line. The AUS-CHN shootout was a nailbiter, with goalie Jun Yang snagging Rowie Webster's opening shot. jin He's opener got past Alicia McCormack. However, Australia was able to consistently find the net after that, while China faltered.Ash Southern, Glencora Ralph, Holly Lincoln-Smith, and Mel Rippon scored for Australia; while only Donglun Song was able to score for China. (Should the score have still be tied after shootouts, a sudden-death shootout would have begun.)
Italy came out swinging against the USA with early goals from Tania di Mario and Federica Radicchi. The USA upped the ante, controlling the scoring in Q2. Di Mario finally put Italy back on the board midway through Q3.
Spain owned Q2, which ultimately forced hosts Great Britain out of the tournament.
Yet again, we're waiting on photos, but we'll post them ASAFP.
