Olympic Women's Water Polo Semifinals: Photos and Results from August 7

Now it gets serious at the Water Polo Arena: the Women's Semifinals are underway, and the intensity has been ramped up even further. Here are the results as they come in, and the photos as they emerge.

• China 14-10 Italy
  
• USA 11-9 Australia 
• Russia 11-9 Great Britain
  
• Spain 10-9 Hungary

Italy rallied in Q4, but it was not enough to overcome the lead that China had amassed.

The USA-Australia match was more suspenseful.  Australia was awarded a penalty shot in the final second of Q4 due to an illegal time-out called by US coach Adam Krikorian. Australian powerhouse Ash Southern nailed the penalty shot (her fourth of the match), forcing two extra-time running quarters. Americans Maggie Steffens and Kami Craig each netted a goal in the first overtime period, and the second was scoreless.

The USA will play the winner of the Spain for the Gold Medal on August 9. Australia will play Hungary for the Bronze.
