San Antonio Spurs VS Los Phoenix Suns-Playoffs-2-May-5-10

The Phoenix Suns wore their "Los Suns" jerseys in their May 5 game against the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs' coach said that his team would have joined the anti-SB 1070 protest with a set of "Los Spurs" jerseys, but couldn't get custom jerseys made in time. Los Suns had the advantage of already having the jerseys ready to roll, as a Cinco de Mayo tribute to Suns fans.

The Suns beat the Spurs 110-102 in Game 2 of the NBA Western semiinals, pulling into a 2-0 lead in the series.

The NBA Players Association is onboard, as is San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who said they would play as "Los Spurs" but couldn't get custom road jerseys made by tonight's Cinco de Mayo tip.

Even President Barack Obama seemed to support the Suns' protest during his Cinco de Mayo address.

The president said: "I know that a lot of you would rather be watching tonight's game -- the Spurs against 'Los Suns' from Phoenix."

The line drew applause from the crowd.

LA Lakers coach Phil Jackson disagreed, saying that basketball and politics shouldn't mix, though "let it play out" is an ill-advised political strategy for anyone, anywhere.

Meanwhile, a growing movement to get Major League Baseball to move the 2011 All-Star Game out of Arizona is afoot, called "Move the Game". This echoes Arizona's reticence to adopt Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and how it cost that state the Super Bowl.
