Man United's New Sponsor: The U.S. Government?
English soccer titan Manchester United says that the financial turmoil surrounding their lead sponsor, AIG Insurance, will not affect the club. According to team officials, the club's massive four-year $100 million sponsorship deal is not in jeopardy despite the fact that the ailing insurer was bailed out by the U.S. government to the tune of $85 billion.
A writer for the Big Lead points out that the bailout means that the Red Devils will be indirectly sponsored by the US government.
So, basically, while one out of eight Michigan residents require food stamps and public elementary school classrooms climb toward 40 students, a further $50 million of taxpayer money, will be donated directly to Manchester United.
The club will then deploy the money to noble causes, such as the Cristiano Ronaldo car fund and Wayne Rooney’s smoking habit.

If the US governement is bailing out AIG's contract with Manchester United. What about Lehman Brother contracts, and other failed businesses contract with other sports clubs....What is the rationale behind this?...I'm confused, really.

It's a massive sponsorship deal for a company that people know little about in the UK (until now of course), so they probably didn't need to have their logo on Man Us shirts after all.
