Manchester Rallies to Beat City 3-2 in Premiere League Opener
Manchester United winger and Portuguese International star Nani scored twice, including a goal in stoppage time to rally past Manchester City in the Community Shield. The Community Shield is the traditional start of the English Premiere League campaign.
City had a 2-0 advantage at the half and looked to be in control of the Manchester Derby. United pulled even on goals from Chris Smalling and Nani. From there United seized control of the flow. In the 94th minute Nani chased down a Wayne Rooney clearance and stripped Vincent Kompany for a break-away goal.
"We all believe until the last minute, and the attitude of the lads in the second half was that everyone believed we could score," Nani said. "It is good to play against Man City and win like that. I think our fans today will be so proud of us. It is a beautiful day to enjoy."
A rash of yellow cards and chippy play littered the typically friendly exhibition match whose proceeds go to charity. It features last season's winner of the FA Cup (City) vs. the League winner (United). Imagine if the NFL kicked off each season with a charity match between the current Super Bowl winner and the team with the best overall regular season record. We would get a Thursday night opener between Green Bay and New England.
