Not surprisingly, many sports fans are wondering why Manti Te'o would create a fake girlfriend. If social media is any indication, many wonder if Manti Te'o might be gay. A simple Twitter search that includes "Te'o + gay" search generates all kinds of results. 

National Post columnist Bruce Arthur tweeted: "If Manti Te'o were gay - and none of us know that - this might explain a lot." The writer included a link to this story about Notre Dame's relationship with gay students. As many commented to Arthur, the idea that Te'o is gay was the first thing to spring to mind where they heard this bizarre story.

As Arthur said, none of us know anything about Te'o's personal life, so we may want to hold off on the gay rumors.

Sportswriter Dave Zirin wrote that plenty of callers to LaVar Arrington's radio show was about "football and the closet."

For the record, Te'o claims he was the victim of a hoax.
