Marian Gaborik to the Vancouver Canucks?
According to Jason Botchford at The Province, the Minnesota Wild's Marian Gaborik has just recently bought a house in Vancouver.
Gaborik becomes a free agent on July 1st and could very well be signing with the Canucks. Rumors were already floating around since Gaborik's former Minnesota Wild line-mate and good friend Pavol Demitra was traded to the Canucks. People are saying Gaborik wants to play with his old friend. To top it off, "Demitra was seen visiting Vancouver weeks before he became a free agent" (Botchford, 2009). Shortly after, Demitra signed an $8 million contract for two years with the Canucks.
Apparently the Wild want to keep Gaborik, and have replaced their coach and general manager with “people vowing to play the run-and-gun game Gaborik has long craved to play but never could under [head coach], Jacques Lemaire” (Botchford, 2009).
Do Vancouver Canucks fans want Gaborik to sign with their team? Well, Gaborik is an injury-prone player. Out of approximately 80 regular season games, he only played 17 games. However, in those 17 games Gaborik proves his star quality by putting up 13 goals and 10 assists for a total of 23 points.
If the Canucks can sign Gaborik for a short-term contract (without spending too much), it will give us a chance to see if Gaborik can stay fit and avoid his history of injuries. Also, Gaborik playing with Demitra would make for a great second line.
While some fans are hoping Gaborik and his injuries stay far away from Vancouver and the Canucks, and others are on the fence, I’m hoping Gaborik will join us. It would be a great addition to the team and would give depth to the Canucks.
