Mariano Rivera Appears To Have Injured His Knee on May 3, 2012. Here is Video
Well, this is kind of sad. Mariano Rivera seems to have suffered an injury prior to the New York Yankees-Kansas City Royals game on May 3, 2012. The 42-year-old Rivera has earned a reputation for being an indestructible war horse, but he had to be carried off the field before the game even started.
The Mariano Rivera injury occurred during batting practice. The veteran reliever was in the outfield shagging fly balls, something he does regularly prior to games. He leaped to catch a ball near the outfield fence and appeared to land awkwardly. He crumpled to ground writhing in pain.
While there hasn't been any official word on the nature of the Rivera injury, some fans are expecting the worst. The injury could mark the first time Rivera has been on the disabled list since 2003.
Update: Sadly, it appears Mariano Rivera may have a torn ACL.
