Mark Messier named Manager of Canadian National Hockey Team

Albertan and Hockey Great, Mark Messier has been named General Manager of he Canadian National Hockey Team.

The St.Albert native spend 25 years in the National Hockey League playing for the Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks and the New York Rangers.  He was recently hired for Glen Sather, former Oiler coach, as a special assistant to the New York Rangers.

Mark Messier has won six Stanley Cups.  He was on the  succcesful 80s Edmonton Oiler team along with Wayne Gretsky.

He is touted as one of the greatest leaders of he game.  Messier's appointment as the General Manger is good news.

"It is an honour for me to be given the opportunity to represent Canada once again, and I am excited to be working with Hockey Canada in preparing for the 2010 IIHF world championship in Germany," Messier said in a Hockey Canada release.

"Over the coming weeks and months, I will be looking to name a management staff, a coaching staff and then identify players that will give Canada the best chance at winning gold in May 2010."

The former NHL great spent 25 years in the league with Edmonton, Vancouver and New York, winning six Stanley Cups while being touted as one of the greatest leaders to ever play the game.
