Mason Raymond Suffered a Serious Injury After Getting Hit By Johnny Boychuk of the Boston Bruins. Here is the Mason Raymond Injury Video

Mason Raymond will miss several months after suffering a back injury during the June 13, 2011 game between the Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks.

The Mason Raymond injury occurred just 20 seconds into Game 6 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals.  Raymond suffered a compression fracture in his vertebrae after and an awkward collision with Boston's Johnny Boychuk.

Canucks players were upset that Boychuk did not receive a penalty on the play.

The referee said he lost his edge - I don't know,” said Canucks captain Henrik Sedin

Vancouver Canucks defenceman Aaron Rome was suspended four games after a late hit on Boston's Nathan Horton.

Based on the replay shown on the NHL network after the game, which was at a different angle, Boychuk was holding Raymond into a position he could not get out of. He should have been suspended, and if a Vancouver player were to do the same thing, a major penalty and suspension would have been handed out without thinking. This just proves what many of us have been saying from the start. The refs are biased, and the NHL is more worried about dragging this out and giving Boston the best chance possible than about actually being impartial or even-handed when enforcing the rules. If he had "lost an edge" he would not have ended up in hospital with spinal chord damage. The video evidence shows that the hit was MUCH later than the Rome hit on Horton, and that there was obvious intent to injure.

Very sorry to see anyone get injured but that hit was well within the rules of professional hockey.  It's the fourth round of the NHL playoffs people are worn down physically/mentaly and more suseptable to serius injury.  I have watched all the games, calls get missed on both teems, I'd rather see that then diving penalties.  Four games for Rome was two games to many, the hit was not from behind.

That was disgusting, it was a definate intent to injure play he had his head between his legs and drove him down and into the boards but alas hes a boston player so he would never get suspended.

Hockey can be a thrilling game when skilled players are allowed to play to the extent of their ability.  This series is disgraceful.  Boston brings shame to the game moreso because it is obviously endorsed by league officials.   I will watch the seventh game tomorrow then my hockey watching days are over.   It has become so pathetic.

I think it's funny that you say Boston brings shame to the game when Vancouver players are acting like little girls flopping around and crying every 2 seconds.  How can you expect to get calls when someone breathes on you and the player drops like he just got stabbed in the face.  It's been hilarious to watch the way they carry themselves biting people and crying, they are a disgrace to the game and the NHL.  The best skilled players hahaha I'm still waiting to see that because so far they haven't been skilled enough to even take a good dive.

The ones brining shame to the game are the Refs this series, and the people at Hockey Operations. Mike Murphy set a precedent a week earlier, suspending Aaron Rome over a two minute minor penalty that led to an injury. Boychuk had Raymond in an awkward position, and the video evidence shows that he was holding him that way. Not even a penalty was called.

Many people have commented that the players throughout the league are taking dives and turning the game into Soccer. The obvious corruption in the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />NHL is definitely making it look more and more like FIFA. And taking a dive does not lead to fractured vertebrae. Boston has proven that they cannot win by skill, so they go after the skilled players on the teams they face, and try and keep them out of the game. That is Bruins hockey, and has been for as long as most of us can remember. It does not make it right. Lets see how you would respond to a hit like the one Raymond took.

The Bruins FANS are as much a disgrace as their players, moreover, spitting and urinating on Canucks fans. That would not happen in Canada; it is assault, and you get locked up. But obviously, the laws in Boston are only there to protect people FROM Boston.
