Mats Sundin Debut with the Canucks
Mats Sundin's debut with the Canucks was slightly anti-climatic but successful none the less with a 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. Sundin played a total of 15 minutes over 24 shifts with no goals, no assists, no shots on net, and won 9 out of 18 faceoffs. He spent most of his 15 minutes playing between Kyle Wellwood and Mason Raymond with 2 powerplay opportunities with the Sedin's. Although he hasn't played a NHL game in 9 months he still felt confident going in.
“Physically, I felt better than I was hoping. It’s good to get that first game out of the way,” said Sundin. " It felt like exactly like where you are at the start of a season, where you're trying to get it back, but the only way to get it back is to play games."
The former Maple Leafs's captain and career scoring leader was bombarded by booing from the Edmonton crowd throughout the game but he doesn't know why. Perhaps it is the far reaching Toronto fan base that has not yet accepted that Sundin will be wearing a Canucks jersey. Maybe it is just Edmonton fans who tend to boo anything. Nevertheless, Sundin's career stats thus far are impressive. He spent 13 seasons with the Maple Leaf's where he scored 555 goals and 1,321 career points in the regular season.
