Mayweather vs Ortiz Knockout Video, Sep 17 2011: Controversial KO
The Mayweather vs Ortiz Fight Ended in a Controversial Knockout. Here is the Floyd Mayweather-Victor Ortiz KO Video
There was plenty of drama at the end of the Floyd Mayweather vs Victor Ortiz fight on September 17, 2011. Mayweather won the fight with a controversial fourth-round knockout.
In the fourth round, Ortiz appeared to briefly take control, unloading on Mayweather. Amid the flurry, Ortiz headbutted Mayweather. Referee Joe Cortez stopped the fight and penalized Ortiz.
Ortiz went over to apologize to Mayweather.
Cortez brought the two fighters back together to re-start the fight.
Ortiz appeared to wait for the fight to start as Mayweather stepped in and knocked him out.
After the fight, referee Joe Cortez said the result was fair, since the fight had re-started even if Ortiz wasn't aware of it.
Cortez said afterward, "Time was in. The fighter needed to keep his guard up. Mayweather did nothing illegal."
Ortiz disagreed.
I took the break by the referee and I obeyed exactly as I was told,” Ortiz said. “And then, boom, he blindsided me.”
SI's Chris Mannix puts some of the blame referee Cortez, who made matters worse "by not properly putting himself between the two fighters and controlling the action."
He also notes that Ortiz probably would have lost the fight anyway.
After the fight, Floyd Mayweather had a heated post-fight interview with HBO's Larry Merchant.
