MIAMI ARENA ROOF IMPLOSION

As previously reported on NowPublic, Sunday marked the end of an era as the New York Yankees played what will likely be their last game ever at Yankee Stadium. That same day another sports arena met its end. The Miami Arena, the former home of the NBA's Miami Heat and NHL's Florida Panthers, was demolished yesterday.

While not nearly as historic as The House That Ruth Built, the stadium did host the 1996 Stanley Cup Finals when the Florida Panthers lost to the Colorado Avalanche in seven games. The NBA's Miami Heat played in the arena until 1999 before moving to their current home, The America Airlines Arena. The Panthers moved to the BankAtlantic Center in 1998.

The future of the site remains uncertain. There is talk of developing the site into a new baseball stadium that would house the Major League's Florida Marlins, but the owner of the Marlins opposes the idea.
