The Florida Marlins Have Changed Their Name To the Miami Marlins For the 2012 Major League Season

The Florida Marlins will have a new stadium and a new name next year. As of the 2012 MLB season, the team will be known as the Miami Marlins.

Many have noted that the Marlins name change means that one more tidbit from Back to the Future II is closer to coming true. That and the Nike Air Mags.

Why Did The Florida Marlins Change Their Name To the Miami Marlins?

The name change likely came so that the team's name will match that of Miami Ballpark, the team's new home. It could also just be that the new name sounds better.

The name Miami Marlins has a long history in the area. Over the years, two minor league teams have been called the Miami Marlins.  Here's a vintage Miami Marlins photo.
