The boy who joined Liverpool at 11 years has seen it all. From the wonder goal at France '98 against Argentina and becoming the European Footballer of the Year in '01 to a 1 year troubled spell at Real Madrid and an "injury plagued" 4 years at Newcastle. Yes, Michael Owen has seen his footballing career flounder like no other. He was once considered to be the most sought after strikers in Europe but he has seen it all go up in smoke after his highly troubled spell at Newcastle.

However, he is now a free agent as his contract with Newcastle was up on 30th June. The more shocking news is that he is all set to join Liverpool's arch rivals Manchester United. The one manager and team where he can revive his career and make a statement for himself to secure a spot in the England squad for next years FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Michael Owen was last night on the verge of completing a sensational move to Manchester United.

Sources close to the England striker confirmed he was in talks with Old Trafford about joining on a free transfer.

And after completing a medical, the deal was expected to go through imminently.

The discussions were said to have taken place at the Lowry Hotel in Salford, which was used by England when they played at Old Trafford .

A source close to Owen's camp last night said: "The deal is on. It could be done in the next couple of days."

Signing Owen, who has been a free agent since his deal with Newcastle expired on Wednesday, would be a major gamble for manager Sir Alex Ferguson given the player's injury record, As well as that, United fans were expecting Fergie to splash out to replace Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

But Sir Alex may feel Owen is a risk worth taking given his goalscoring pedigree, especially if he can get him to agree to a short-term pay-as-you-play deal.

Ferguson pulled off a similar coup when he landed Henrik Larsson on a temporary deal a couple of seasons ago and the Swede proved a big hit.

This is shocking...

But Sir Alex knows the best.

Michael Owen will definitely shine bright in the final years of his career.

It is definitely a gamble but Manchester United are known to do it the hard way.

They will do it again!

Nice title buddy!!!

Yeah It does seem to be shocking at the first go. However, Michael is a natural goal scorer and he will definitely be a very good attacking option for SAF.
